Green Tourism

At Aberfeldy Cottages we care about people, our quality and the environment so when you stay at Aberfeldy Cottages you can rest assured that you will not only receive the very best of customer service but that your holiday will have the smallest carbon footprint possible.

At Aberfeldy Cottages we are conscious of our surroundings and realise the impact we all can create on our environment. We buy locally and have a recycling policy whereby waste is kept to a minimum and recyclable materials are sorted and collected by the appropriate centres and charities i.e. glass, plastic, paper, ink cartages, etc. reflecting the importance we place on preserving our unspoilt environment for visitors today and in the future.

Individually and we can minimise our impact on the Scottish countryside if we all give just a little more thought as to how, on a local scale, we can help, which collectively can make a great deal of difference at a global level.

We can start by thinking about:

  • Leaving the car behind, whenever possible and walking, cycling or using public transport
  • Turning down central heating a degree or two and switching off lights in empty rooms
  • Boiling just enough water for what you need rather than filling the kettle every time
  • Buying only what you need, preferably locally-sourced
  • Re-using plastic carrier bags
  • Recycling glass, tin cans and paper where possible by using the containers provided at the cottages
  • Showering more and bathing less
  • Turning taps off when not in use

These are all small, simple changes we can make in our daily lives. But if enough of us make them, we can make a big difference.

In November 2002, the town of Aberfeldy in Perthshire became Scotland’s first Fairtrade Town. The purpose of a Fairtrade Town is to help tackle poverty by enabling disadvantaged producers from poor countries to receive a better deal. In order to fulfil this aim, Aberfeldy had to demonstrate that it had achieved the following five goals.
· Commitment from the Local Authority
· Availability of Fairtrade products to local consumers.
· Fairtrade products used by local work places and community organisations and served in local cafés/catering establishments.
· Media coverage and popular support for the campaign
· A local Fairtrade steering group is established to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade.
The award has resulted in this historic Perthshire town diversifying what it can offer visitors, setting it apart from similar towns in the area. As part of this process, the town also supported local producers as a way of promoting quality produce.
